What is Normal Map for Photoshop?

Photoshop's classic normal-map workflows rely on the NVIDIA Texture Tools or an Emboss/High-Pass trick. This browser tool produces the same tangent-space result without installing anything, and the exported PNG opens straight in Photoshop for further editing, painting or channel work.

Common Uses for Normal Map for Photoshop

  • Generate a base normal map, then hand-paint surface variation in Photoshop
  • Avoid installing the NVIDIA normal-map filter on a new machine
  • Produce normal maps on any OS including macOS and Linux

A Photoshop-friendly normal map workflow

Generate the normal map here, open it in Photoshop, then paint subtle height changes by dabbing on a low-opacity brush in the red and green channels - moving pixels toward 128 reduces slope, away increases it. Keep the blue channel high (near 255) so the surface faces the viewer. Save as PNG and reload in your 3D app to check.

Avoiding common Photoshop pitfalls

Never save a normal map as JPEG - compression noise bends the encoded directions and produces mottled shading. Do not apply colour adjustment layers that shift the whole image (hue/saturation) because every channel change is a direction change. If you must resize, use 'Nearest Neighbor' for pixel work or a high-quality resample, and regenerate from the height map when possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the NVIDIA normal map plugin?
No. This tool computes the same Sobel-based tangent-space normal map in the browser. Use the plugin only if you need its specific 3D preview.
Can I edit the generated normal map in Photoshop?
Yes. Download the PNG and open it in Photoshop. Work in 8/16-bit RGB, avoid JPEG (it corrupts the vector data), and re-export as PNG.
Why not use the Photoshop Emboss trick?
Emboss plus channel manipulation is slow, error-prone and not truly tangent-space. A dedicated generator is faster and gives physically consistent results.
